This is a jersey fabric t-shirt that was given to me but sadly did not fit. I thought it would make a really cute tote bag! First off I am not the best sewer in the world by any means. I have been teaching myself for a little while now and still make tons of errors, but the process is fun. I did not make any seams on this bag nor did I use any measurements. I just went with it!
Using my rotary cutter I cut off the top of the shirt. Just leaving the bottom.
Next I cut off the seams so that I had two separate pieced of fabric.
I choose to line my tote bag with a hot pink fabric (sorry it looks red in the picture).
I measured the fabric from my shirt and then cut out my lining according to those measurements.
I decided to use the sleeves as the handles for the bag.
I cut them off and laid them on top of each other and cut them to be and even length.
With each sleeve I fold over half the sleeve once and then repeated on the other side.
I could have just folded it in half and left it like that also.
I used a zig zag stitch because the jersey style fabric is stretchy.
Sew both sides of each strap.

Position the strap between the lining and fabric.
Pin in place and sew on.
I then placed the wrong sides of the fabric facing each other.
Placement: pink lining, jersey fabric, jersey fabric, pink lining
Sew around the ends of the fabric.
Flip it inside out and you have a new tote bag!
